Who Am I Reports: Kids each choose a different animal and write a paragraph telling where the animal lives, what it eats, and how it looks, etc… (Use the Rainforest Animals and Animal Photos Library to enhance their projects)

 Math

Online research: Have kids find average lengths and weights of some rainforest animals and compare to themselves (draw pictures for them to aid in understanding)

Social Studies

Show children where the Amazon Rainforest is on a map; List countries where rainforest are I think this is in the Kapok Tree book); make posters saying why we should not destroy the rainforests

 Science/ Health

Scholastic News: Look Inside a Rain Forest

Make Flip-Flap Booklets (booklets made so you can see different layers) and label each page with each of the 4 layers of the rainforest; draw an animal and a plant that lives in each layer

Make a sheet of rainforest animal clip art; Have students cut out each square and sort the animals into 4 groups (mammals, birds, reptiles, and insects); glue to construction paper

“Star Gaze” each night for 2 weeks and keep a journal of thoughts, questions, comments; also, “Moon Watch” during that same time and record the shape of the moon each night in the journal

Internet research: use a kids’ search engine to find facts about earth, moon, and sun. Make a chart of the findings (Check out Dust Bunny Site, too)

Children act out Earth and moon rotation with sun’s light
