ABC Order: Arrange continents in alphabetic order

 Social Studies
(use Internet Resources if needed)

Land and Water: Brainstorm list of ways land and water are used by people; name land an water forms in your area; collage of land and water forms

Maps and Map Keys: Look at a map key and discuss what it means; Talk about symbols they have learned about in the past; Make a map of your home using symbols on a map key

Directions: Use a compass to find and label the cardinal directions in your home; Practice the cardinal directions (N, S, W, E: I always tell them that West and East go Left to Right and spell WE); Give blank US map to kids and have them label cardinal directions and some states that they know

Continents and Oceans: Locate N. and S. Poles and continents in each location; Give kids blank world map and label each continent and ocean and color); Play “I Spy” (ie: I spy a continent north of Africa)

Boundaries: Give kids a blank US map and have them trace the boundary around their state and color the state; help kids make a list of all the states that touch their state; Using map with rivers on it, have student identify boundaries made by these bodies of water; Using poster board and objects to represent different landforms, have children work together to create a topographical map of your state

Field trip: To nearby land or water form (We will probably go to a nearby park that has a lake)
